Clock Uncertainty in Trading Alert Logs

A precise-looking timestamp is not the same thing as an accurately aligned clock.

Record what each timestamp means

A timestamp might label a market observation, an application event, server dispatch or device display. Save that meaning with the field. UTC formatting makes a time unambiguous but does not prove the clock was correct. A time zone solves presentation, not synchronisation. Rounding to seconds also loses information even when the underlying clock was accurate.

Give each observed event a clock source and a justified uncertainty bound. If no bound is established, leave it unknown. Setting zero because a form demands a number creates false precision. The worksheet requires explicit assumptions before calculating a bounded interval, and exports them alongside the reader-entered events.

Use intervals instead of a false exact delay

For two entered clock values, the apparent difference is the second minus the first. Under independent absolute error bounds, a conservative interval expands that difference by the sum of both bounds. This is arithmetic under stated assumptions, not a calibration of the clocks. The bounds must cover the relevant error; an unsupported small bound makes the resulting precision meaningless.

If the interval crosses zero, the entered clocks do not establish the event order on their own. If its entire upper bound is negative, the declared sequence and assumptions are inconsistent. Do not silently swap the events, clamp the result to zero or convert it into a performance observation. Inspect the original record and clock attribution.

Keep the conclusion stage-specific

Dispatch-to-receipt and receipt-to-observed-action intervals describe different stages. The latter can include attention, decision work or an unrelated action; the reader must identify what the action was. It is not a broker fill unless separate account evidence says so. Missing action time should remain absent while the earlier observable stage can still be analysed.

For comparisons, use the same event definitions and justified bounds. Do not rank services whose timing fields cover different stages. Preserve raw observations and uncertainty in the export so a later reviewer can reconstruct the assumption-driven calculation without trusting a single displayed number.
